We are proud to announce that MEETinLEEDS’ flagship accommodation Storm Jameson Court has been awarded a Green Tourism Goldstar in the Campus Accommodation category, at the national Green Tourism Conference, held recently at The Palace Hotel in Manchester.
Storm Jameson Court is one of ten University of Leeds conference venues accredited by the Green Tourism scheme since 2011, and was shortlisted for the award as a result of its last audit undertaken in 2013.
The audit report highlighted that the Team were to be congratulated in retaining a GOLD award for the second time, and was recognition of the commitment, knowledge, and drive shown in the work undertaken on site. The scope of its aspects included high energy efficiency in design, fabric, and services installed. Incorporation of a district combined heat and power (CHP) supply; rainwater harvesting for flushing of toilets; excellent lighting with key fob operated controls; high levels of recycling through the campus waste management contract; together with an extensive range of volunteer activities undertaken with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust; and the planting of Elm trees for the Great British Elm Experiment.
Storm Jameson Court was shortlisted along with Agnes Blackadder Hall (University of St Andrews), Caledonian Court (Glasgow Caledonian University), and McIntosh Hall (University of St Andrews). In winning the award, the judges praised the efforts made by staff in supporting and promoting sustainability on the site.
The award was presented by the renowned environment activist Satish Kumar, to Chris Storey, Manager of Storm Jameson Court, and Mike Leonard, Residential Property Manager at the University of Leeds. The shortlist process began with an assessment of over 2,000 businesses that had all achieved the GOLD award in 2013, with 60 making the final list for 15 award categories, representing the top three percent of Green Tourism businesses in the UK.
Mike Leonard had this to say about the nomination:
“We are very proud to win such a prestigious and sought after award in a highly competitive category. It is all down to the hard work of all of the staff involved and the commitment we have to the University’s Sustainability Strategy.
“We currently have 10 service locations registered with the scheme, with 5 of our operational locations subject to an annual sustainability audit each year.
“All of our locations have been awarded either a Gold or Silver standard, which demonstrates our understanding of the importance of sustainable development and that the strategies and measures we have in place to guide our performance have us well on the way to becoming a sustainable University with conference and events facilities to match.”
Green Tourism was launched 17 years ago, and is the biggest environmental accreditation scheme in the world, helping nearly 10,000 businesses improve their commitment to sustainability in Europe, Canada, and New Zealand.

60 UK finalists have been drawn from a total of more than 2,400 contenders whittled down to make the list of nominations for 13 award categories.
Now in its fourth year the annual awards aim to honour those businesses and organisations that have done the most to promote sustainability by implementing cost-saving practices that help the environment, improve customer services and benefit the bottom line.
Mike Leonard, Residential Property Manager at the University of Leeds, had this to say about the nomination:
“We are very proud to be nominated for such a prestigious and sought after award in a highly competitive category. It is all down to the hard work of all of the staff involved and the commitment we have to the University’s Sustainability Strategy.

As one of only three Yorkshire businesses to reach the finals Storm Jameson is up against 33 other businesses from England, 22 from Scotland, one from Wales and one from Northern Ireland. All were nominated after being assessed for their innovation, cost savings and green ambassadorship.
The winners of each category will be announced at the Green Tourism Annual conference on 10th November 2014, during a ceremony held in the Palace Hotel, Manchester.
Andrea Nicholas, Director of Green Tourism, said:
“The Goldstar Awards recognise the best of the best in Britain when it comes to creating and maintaining a thriving sustainable tourism industry.
A total of 60 green tourism businesses from across the UK have been shortlisted for the Goldstar Awards this year out of more than 2,400 entries. These finalists represent the top 3 per cent of Green Tourism businesses in the UK.
The standard has been exceptionally high this year and each of the shortlisted finalists has shown a dedicated commitment to providing consumers with great service and value for money while at the same time championing the cause of sustainability.”
Green Tourism was launched 17 years ago and is now the biggest of its kind in the world having helped nearly 10,000 businesses improve their commitment to sustainability. The organisation has become a world leader in highlighting the importance of protecting environments, respecting local cultures, supporting communities, conserving natural resources and minimising pollution.
